The APDS Task Force on Best Practice-Ideal Resident Interviews was appointed in the 2019-20 period to examine and make recommendations to improve fairness and reduce medical student stress relating to the resident application/interview process. Topics such as creating a less instantaneous time demand in place of a ‘first-come, first-appointment’ process for assigning interview slots, and the recommendation that surgery programs refrain from issuing more invitations for interviews than the number of available interview time slots were addressed. Interviewing issues became more profound with the onset of the COVID-19 realities and environment.
