Joint APDS/ASE/ARAS Statement on COVID-19/Coronovirus and Surgical Education Week, April 28-May 2, 2020

Joint ASE/APDS/ARAS Statement on Surgical Education Week 2020

Updated March 19, 2020

Over recent weeks and days, the Surgical Education Week (SEW) 2020 team has been actively monitoring and evaluating developments concerning COVID-19, with our foremost goal being to ensure the safety of our participants. We appreciate your patience as we’ve processed each ominous new warning, including the Washington Governor’s ban on gatherings through March 31, the CDC recommendations, and White House announcement on social distancing.

The three joint societies’ (ARAS, APDS, and ASE) deliberations must also develop solutions to legal and hotel issues.  For now, be assured that we know from cancellations already that it is very improbable that the vast majority of members could travel to Seattle (so many health care and educational institutions have imposed travel bans binding on their employees), and that the law might not even permit us to hold the meeting.  It will take a little while to work out all details, but you should be aware of the above assessment as you consider any pending airfare and hotel room arrangements.  SEW is extending the deadline to submit a cancellation/refund request until April 20, as we also explore a variety of formats, including a possible virtual component.

Each society will be contacting its members with more specific details shortly.
