Thoracic Surgery Research Fellowship

The Division of Thoracic Surgery is accepting applications for a funded one- or two-year Research Fellowship at the Swedish Health System Cancer and Digestive Health Institutes in Seattle, Washington beginning July 1, 2022. Applicants are ideally surgical trainees in or completing an accredited ACGME program in the United States or Canada who have a required or optional research year(s) within their surgical program or a gap year before additional training. US Residents or H1-b eligible visa status only.
The Fellow will be responsible for conducting clinical research projects in conjunction with the members of the Division including retrospective reviews, prospective clinical trials, RCTs and large database studies. The Division has 6 principal areas of research including:
• Foregut diseases including GERD, Barrett’s esophagus and achalasia
• Lung cancer including screening
• Esophageal and gastric cancer
• Surgical technology evaluation including robotics and cost analysis
• Thymic diseases, and
• Pleural based diseases.
Resources include a weekly research meeting, access to a biostatistician, database manager and clinical trials support staff. The Fellow is able participate in the academic (non-clinical) activities of our Division and with the General Surgery Residency Program at our center.
The Division includes 5 thoracic surgeons, 2 interventional pulmonologists, 4 advanced registered nurse practitioners, 2 clinical fellows and 1-2 research fellows. The research program has produced an average of 10-12 oral presentations and 15-20 peer-reviewed publications per year for the last 4 years.
