The department of surgery’s surgical oncology service encompasses disease sites including pancreas, colorectal, gastric, melanoma and sarcoma. Current research conducted focuses on clinical, outcomes, and translational projects. This includes the use of national cancer databases such as the National Cancer Database (NCDB), Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER), and the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). In addition to these, we have utilized in-house prospectively collected databases in various disease sites to perform clinical and outcomes research. Research support includes on-site statisticians, and the unique assistance of medical students who participate in a summer research program that has been established by Sanjay S. Reddy, MD FACS and Jeffrey M. Farma, MD FACS. This collaborative approach to research helps build a mentoring relationship with the faculty, the fellow, and also the students involved. In addition to the research experience, you will be included in a series of tumor board conference in disciplines including gastrointestinal, melanoma and sarcoma. There are bi-monthly research meetings with faculty, surgical oncology fellows, and the students. Lastly, there are a series of surgical oncology didactics which help complete a robust experience.
