We offer two research fellowship tracks at the National Cancer Institute (NCI): Surgical Oncology and Cancer Immunotherapy/ Surgical Oncology. These encompass two time-honored programs combining basic science research in surgical oncology with training in clinical research through direct patient care. The unique environment of the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) allows for direct bedside-to-bench and bench-to-bedside translational research under the direction of world leaders in surgical oncology and endocrine surgery. The two-year surgical oncology fellowship includes 18 months of bench laboratory experience in one of the many NCI laboratories and 6 months of clinical rotations over three surgical oncology subspecialties: surgical oncology, endocrine surgery, and thoracic surgery. Clinical research opportunities are available over the entire research period. Additional, optional research years may be available. The three-year cancer immunotherapy and surgical oncology fellowship incorporates a year of clinical experience in the design and conduct of clinical trials in cell-based cancer immunotherapy developed in the Surgery Branch of the NCI. Following that year, the fellow moves on to 18 months of bench laboratory experience in one of the multiple immunotherapy laboratories within the NCI and 6 months of clinical rotations over three surgical oncology subspecialties: surgical oncology, endocrine surgery, and thoracic surgery.  Thank you for your interest in the NCI Surgical Oncology Research Fellowships. It is our great pleasure to train surgery residents from around the United States at the nation’s premier research hospital located in Bethesda, Maryland. This fellowship has trained surgeon scientists for over 50 years and we continue that tradition today with cutting edge clinical trials and state-of-the-art basic science research for those selected to join our storied program.
