The Division of Thoracic Surgery is accepting applications for a funded one or two year Research Fellowship at the Swedish Cancer Institute and Medical Center in Seattle, Washington beginning July 1, 2020. Applicants are ideally surgical trainees in or completing an accredited ACGME program in the United States or Canada who have a required or optional research year(s) within their surgical program or a gap year before additional training. US Residents or H1-b eligible visa status only.
The Fellow will be responsible for generating research ideas, developing and conducting clinical research projects in conjunction with the members of the Division. The Division has 6 principle areas of research including:
• Benign foregut disease including GERD, Barrett’s and achalasia
• Lung cancer including screening
• Robotic surgery
• Surgical technology evaluation including cost analysis
• Thymic diseases, and
• Pleural based diseases
Resources include a weekly research meeting, access to a biostatistician, database manager and clinical trials support staff. The Fellow is able participate in the academic (non-clinical) activities of our Division and with the General Surgery Program at our center.
The Division includes 5 thoracic surgeons, 2 interventional pulmonologists, 4 advanced registered nurse practitioners, 2 clinical fellows and 1 international research fellow. The research program has produced an average of 10-12 oral presentations and 15-20 peer-reviewed publications per year for the last 4 years.
