Date Posted: September 13, 2021

The Gosain Lab at Lurie Children’s is seeking a surgical resident for a paid research fellowship during the 2022-2023 academic year (with the potential to extend to a two-year position). The Gosain Lab encompasses broad clinical, translational, and basic science topics in plastic surgery, craniofacial surgery, tissue regeneration, education, and global health, among others. Our NIH-funded projects focus on a porcine model of tissue expansion. We are analyzing the effects of tissue expansion on the architecture, genetics, and biomechanics of the affected tissues. We aim to optimize the outcome of tissue expansion in the face of radiation therapy, which has direct implications for improving outcomes of implant-based breast reconstruction. The research fellow’s main responsibilities will include performing surgical procedures that consist of tattooing, expander implantation, expander filling, and tissue harvest. Fellows will also become proficient in conducting wet lab techniques to analyze tissues and are expected to contribute to the preparation of manuscripts and grants. Additional opportunities are available to become involved with other clinical projects in the Gosain Lab, as well as within the broader Northwestern University Division of Plastic Surgery. This opportunity is ideal for general surgery residents or related surgical specialties who wish to pursue a career in plastic surgery, and have completed at least two years of surgical training, though no specific prior experience with tissue expansion is required. Applicants who have two years to devote to full-time research will be more strongly considered. Full salary and benefits provided according to PGY level and ACGME standards. Dr. Arun K. Gosain is a pediatric plastic surgeon and serves as Division Chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. His research laboratory is supported by several major institutions including the National Institutes of Health and The Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF). Dr. Gosain has served in leadership roles for multiple professional organizations including American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Plastic Surgery Foundation, American Board of Plastic Surgery, American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Residency Review Committee, and American Council of Graduate Medical Education. He is widely regarded as a leader in craniofacial surgery, as a successful surgeon-scientist, and he has been recognized with awards and lectureships for his work as a mentor. Dr. Gosain is excited to welcome a research fellow for the upcoming one- or two-year term.
