The Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria is seeking a board-certified Surgeon with at least three years of outstanding clinical, academic, teaching and administrative experience to serve as Program Director of the General Surgery Training Program. General surgeons with sub-specialty experience are encouraged to apply.
The primary responsibility of this position, which will include 30% administrative, non-clinical time, is to lead all activities of this well-established residency consisting of 20 general surgery residents, graduating 4 residents per year.
The identified candidate will spend their remaining effort building a clinical practice with our teaching hospitals OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center and UnityPoint Health Methodist. Residents are trained in advanced technologies including intensive robotics and laparoscopic training, specialty and sub-specialty training, and a Surgical Skills Lab curriculum provided at the American College of Surgeons accredited Jump Simulation and Education Center.

• In partnership with the Chair of the Department of Surgery, develop, revise and evaluate curriculum and courses to ensure a high quality educational program for the general surgery residency that is consistent with advances in the field and implementing policies as needed.
• Must have responsibility, authority, and accountability for the evaluation and promotion of residents, and disciplinary action; supervision of residents, and resident education in the context of patient care and provide an opportunity for residents to raise concerns and provide feedback in a confidential manner without fear of intimidation or retaliation.
• Direct recruitment and marketing efforts and allocate resources accordingly.
• Ensure that all who educate residents effectively role model outstanding professionalism, high quality patient care, educational excellence, and a scholarly approach to work, as outlined by the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) in the Core Competencies.
• Develop and oversee a process to evaluate candidates prior to approval as program faculty members for participation in the residency program education and at least annually thereafter.
• Understand the social determinants of health of the populations that served and incorporate them in the design and implementation of the program curriculum, with the ultimate goal of addressing these needs and disparities.
• Ensure that the program’s leadership, faculty members, support personnel and residents are aware of and follow the Sponsoring Institution’s policies and procedures.
• Serve on appropriate educational committees at the College of Medicine.
• Commit 30-40% FTE of non-clinical time to the administration of the program.
• Perform inpatient and outpatient care on a resident teaching service as an attending physician and general surgeon with sub-specialty expertise.
• Serve on appropriate hospital committees to improve the quality of patient care.
• Perform duties in a manner that complies with all applicable standards, rule, policies and regulations of the hospital, the University of Illinois, Joint Commission and applicable local, state and federal regulations.
• Perform clinical research and collaborate with fellows, residents and medical students on research projects.
• MD degree or foreign equivalent.
• Eligible to obtain permanent Illinois medical license.
• Eligible for board certification in general surgery with sub-specialty expertise in Vascular, Breast, Plastic, Minimally invasive or Colon and Rectal Surgery.
• Eligible for faculty appointment at rank of Assistant/Associate Professor/Professor.
• ACGME Accreditation residency trained.
• Must be eligible for medical staff membership and privileges at university-affiliated teaching hospitals.
Other desired qualifications include:
• Experience in academia, with a minimum of 3 years of documented educational and/or administrative experience.
• Associate or Professor preferred.
• Experience in teaching surgery to medical students and residents.
• Peer recognition in general surgery and participation in regional/national societies and editorial board appointment on specialty journals.
• Experience in presentation/participation in national meetings.
• Participation as a member in national, regional or local surgical organizations.
• Must demonstrate a history and involvement with scholarly activity.
