Acute Care Surgery Fellow (Clinical Instructor)
The Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery provides care at Vidant Medical Center’s level 1 trauma center, serving eastern North Carolina, an expansive geographic region consisting of 29 counties with a population of over 1.5 million people. Vidant Medical Center, a 909 bed tertiary care teaching facility, serves as the primary teaching and clinical care venue for an integrated nine hospital hub and spoke system.
East Carolina University offers a one-year Acute Care Surgery fellowship beginning August 1, 2021 with training taking place at Vidant Medical Center (VMC).
VMC is a state of North Carolina accredited, and American College of Surgeons verified, level I trauma center, and is one of the busiest tertiary care academic medical centers in the country. The trauma center at VMC admits approximately 2,800 patients annually, and the trauma and surgical intensive care unit evaluates over 1,500 patients annually.
As the only tertiary care center serving the entirety of Eastern Carolina, VMC is unique in its volume, breadth and complexity of trauma and surgical critical care illness.
The unique feature of the ACS year relates to the lack of competing residents and fellows on the majority of rotations, including orthopedics and neurosurgery. Mandatory rotations include trauma, emergency general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, vascular and interventional surgery, as well as thoracic and hepatobilliary.
Electives are available in burns, pediatric surgery, and transplant/urology. The year includes intensive experience in trauma and emergency general surgery, with fellows serving as the attending on those services, as well as a special focus on trauma systems and acute care surgery leadership.
The clear and simple goal of our fellowship is to train the next generation of leaders in acute care surgery.
Completion of an ACGME accredited General Surgery Residency AND Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.
MD or DO degree from an appropriately accredited institution.
Board eligible/Board certified in General Surgery AND Surgical Critical Care.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without needing sponsorship.
