Chief Resident in Quality and Safety (Fellowship Position)

The Edward Hines Jr. Veteran Adminstration (VA) Hospital along with Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC) is offering a one year post-residency position focused on quality improvement and patient safety. The position begins on July 1st, 2017 and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The Chief Resident in Quality and Safety (CRQS) fellowship includes a teaching, leadership, research and clinical role. • As a teacher, the CRQS is expected to participate in teaching of QI/PS to General Surgery residents. • As a leader, the CRQS will serve as a member of Patient Safety Committees at both the Hines VA and LUMC bringing the perspective of a trained General Surgeon to patient safety event analyses and initiatives. • As a researcher, the CRQS will have a mentored project in QI/PS that will be presented at a regional or national venue. The CRQS’s ability to develop the project will be augmented by attending a 1-week “CRQS Boot Camp” immersion experience in the fall that teaches advanced quality improvement and patient safety concepts, skills, and hands-on use of simulation in teaching. Monthly two-way interactive video-teleconferences, with pre-assigned preparatory work occur throughout the year. • As a clinician, the CRQS will function as an Attending on the Hines General Surgery Service, leading daily rounds, taking call, staffing General Surgery Clinic, and operating independently. No more than 25% of the CRQS’ time will be spent on clinical duties. The CRQS must have successfully completed an ACGME accredited General Surgery Residency by the start of the position and be eligible for board certification. The CRQS must also qualify for credentialing and privileging as a licensed independent practitioner. It is the expectation that after completion of this year, the CRQS will be well positioned to transition into an academic position or further his/her training with an academic fellowship and be a leader in surgical quality improvement and patient safety.
