Journal of Surgical Education

With thanks to Dr. Weigelt, editor of Journal of Surgical Education (JSE), program coordinators now have a forum for publishing.  He has created a section – Program Coordinators’ Corner – that will feature an article written by a coordinator.  This opportunity had its debut with the January/February 2006 issue.

What is unique to this journal is that coordinators do not need an advanced degree to be the first or primary author, nor do they need to be certified.  Topics for the article are not limited.  Adult education concepts, medical education ideas, research, “how-to” articles are all welcome.  Please access the link to “Instructions for authors” for further information on the requirements for structure.

This opportunity brings both recognition and responsibility.  General Surgery program coordinators have been recognized by the Association of Program Directors in Surgery as viable and necessary members of the educational team, and have acknowledged their skills, knowledge and abilities.  The program coordinators are challenged to continue to perform on a professional level and merit that recognition and acknowledgement.  They are also responsible for meeting the publication needs and deadlines of the journal.

An ARCS editorial board has been formed comprising of Ava Fulbright (Orlando Regional Medical Center), Julie Gully (Good Samaritan Hospital-Cincinnati), Gretchen Lynch (U of Missouri-Columbia), Suzanne Moon (Medical College of Georgia-Augusta), Judy Craig (UT Southwestern, Dallas) and Ruth Nawotniak (UB-SUNY).

The process for consideration of articles for publication:

  • Coordinator submits article to Ruth Nawotniak – rhn@buffalo.edu.
  • The author(s) names are removed from the article before the reviewer receives it.

  • Three members of the ARCS JSE Review Board will review the article and give feedback.
  • The author submits rewrites which are reviewed and returned with feedback as needed
  • Pending approval of the ARCS JSE Review Board , the author will submit the article to Dr. Weigelt for review and comment.
  • The author may need to continue to refine the article.
  • Pending Dr. Weigelt’s approval, the author will submit the article to JSE following their guidelines (Instructions to authors guidelines)
  • The JSE review board will review and comment.
  • The author has a defined timeframe in which to address the suggested revisions.  If this deadline is not met, the article will be discarded.
  • Once the revision has been accepted, the author will be notified by email of the publication date.  The author can also go on line to check the status.
  • The author forwards this email notification to Ruth Nawotniak.
